This small courtyard garden originally consisted mainly of shingle, some paving stepping stones and planting. The shingle did not work well with a table and chairs and the plants were getting to big making an already small space feel even smaller. The brief was to maximise the space for outdoor living with a low maintenance garden. A contemporary white paving slab was chosen to make the space feel bigger. The new patio was surrounded by planting borders to soften the edge of the paving. These borders contained predominantly evergreen plants to keep the garden looking good all year round. A corner L-shaped bench was built using Yellow Balau hardwood decking with planting beneath it. A low voltage outdoor lighting system was also installed to enable this garden to be used day and night.
