Located in the heart of Southampton, the customer wanted an easy to look after city centre garden that was a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life and a place to entertain friends. Working to a strict budget Paul produced a design to add some much needed greenery and interest to the garden. The original garden was completely laid to patio with no planting beds. As the soil beneath the slabs was of a very poor quality raised beds were built using softwood sleepers and filled with fresh topsoil and compost. The height of the raised beds also meant they could act as extra seating when entertaining friends. The beds were built at a 45 degree angle to the existing patio to add a sense of movement and interest to the garden and make the space feel larger. The plants used were chosen to provide a lush exotic feel and create an urban oasis. A good mix of evergreens were used to give all year interest and the colours red, yellow and orange, in both the flowers and foilage were used to give a vibrant feel to the space. Low voltage LED lights were fixed into the sleeper beds to add to the night time atmosphere and enable the customer to enjoy their garden long into the night.
